HEREFORD HISTORY LESSON (1055 AD)

The Autumn Big Game 2019 ("Mortimers Cross Redux aka Operation Scylla") was fought over the same ground as the historic Battle of Mortimer's Cross, 2nd February 1461. This was hardly the only occasion, however, when warfare came to the County - to the contrary, one of the earliest recorded historic battles took place around Hereford itself in 1055:

A 28mm representation of Hereford in 1055. Castle Green is easy to spot. The City's walls appear made
of wood rather than the later substantial stone structures (some parts of which survive to this day).
Matt Crump of the splendid "wargamesinadungeon" blog has recreated all the action of Hereford 1055 HERE. Lord de Braose, Edward VIII's Lord Warden of the Marches, must be praying that history does not repeat itself......

Note1: Detailed information on the battle and the wooden state of Hereford's defences can be found HERE

Note2: Matt has also lovingly detailed the progress of the VBCW in the Cumberland area - see all his beautifully illustrated posts HERE
